August 24, 2007 - Posted by Alice SchneblyWho's afraid of the big bad wolf?Project Specs The The other day I was telling Grace I had the urge to knit up another Crafty Alien critter. I still love all my Backyard Critters, and they have to be some of my favorite things I’ve knitted this year. We brainstormed for awhile and then Grace suggested a cute little wolf. Well, with a few modifications of Crafty Alien’s fox pattern, he came to be! I decided to go with a heather grey for the main color and added a small bit of black for the tip of his tail. The construction for this guy was quite simple since I didn’t have to knit any extra pieces other than the ears. I attached the ears prior to felting which really made this pattern pretty fuss free. After felting I shaped the wolf how I wanted him, and also put a little frosting tip inside while he dried to make his nose a little pointier and more wolf-like. The hardest part for me (as with all the critters I’ve made it seems) is getting the facial features just right. I think it took me longer than the knitting! I spent a long time needle felting the eyes and fangs on, trying to get them perfect. I am pretty happy with how they turned out… though I am always thinking of things I could probably improve on for next time! This has really got me thinking about how easy it is to modify these patterns into other creatures. I bet you could figure out how to change them into any animal you wanted to if you tried! Overall I’m really pleased that this mischievous little wolf came out pretty close to the original vision I had in my head. He really doesn’t look too scary but I bet he’s capable of getting himself into some trouble ;) I’m already working on a group of critters for him to terrorize… can you guess what they’ll be? |
