April 15, 2007 - Posted by Grace SchneblyWhat the Muk!
Project Specs When I first saw this pattern I felt pretty intimidated, mainly because I hadn't even seen a pair of knit boots before! But I figured I might as well give it a try and was pleased when they knit up so easily. The hardest part was finding a substitution for the ridiculously expensive Plymouth Foxy which retails at $27.99/skein. The pattern calls for 6 skeins to complete the pair of boots, and I was definitely not willing to spend over $150 on the fur let alone the whole pair of boots that I was planning to give as a Christmas present! I tried searching for examples other people had knitted, but there is very little information out there about this pattern. Maybe the cost of the Foxy is big deterrent. Alice and I shopped around for a bit for a reasonable substitute and eventually found Jo-Ann Sensations Mink, and I figured I might as well try it out. I ended up spending $12 (four skeins at on sale at $3/skein) for Mink, as opposed to the $168 it would have cost if I used Foxy!
Once the Muks were dry, I followed all of the finishing instructions in the pattern, except for two minor things. Instead of attaching pompoms to the ends of the laces, I attached horn beads purchased from www.joann.com. I also decided not to add the embroidery on the toes. I couldn't resist trying them on to see how they fit. They are fun to wear around, the double sole makes them squishy and soft. However the uncovered soles can be extremely slippery, and it was a definite challenge walking around on hardwood floors. I read that you can sew on leather soles or spray stuff on them to give some traction, and would definitely recommend doing that if you have anything other than carpeted floors. These boots were really fun to knit, especially since they are so unique. Even though they were destined to be my sister's (they are pink and furry, which really screams Diane), I think that I will probably knit a pair for myself in the future! |

Hi,
I'm wanting to knit my daughter a pair. are you able to share the pattern if it is no longer available?
and thanks for all the extra tidbits you provided.
hi I have been looking for knit or crochet mukluk patterns for days and cannot find one to print the instructions and make them!!! may I have the instructions or anyone have suggestions as I dont have alot of moola but have alot of yarn, lol! need to keep busy! thank you for sharing this picture!
I have just purchased the wool for this project. I bought Malabrigo Kettle dyed pure merino wool in a chestnut color. Now I am in search for the Foxy substitution. I can't wait to make these, I plan on finding a heavy duty sole for them so I can wear them out-
Apparently Joann's doesn't make the mink yarn anymore that you used in the mikluks. Could you let me know the details of the Mink fun fur you used so I could try to find another substitute? The Plymouth Foxy is 2 sts/in using size 15 needles - I can't imagine finding an easily available substitute!
I decided to spin some felting bats I have to make the yarn for these. I have lots of colored eyelash to use for the fur. As the yarn is shades of lavender, I wasn't worried about realistic fur. I am so glad you added an unfelted picture, so I can compare how it's supposed to look. Wish me luck. I have 3 more batts to spin, but at a bulky weight they go fast. I thought a bulky equal to two worsteds would work. With me luck.
I think these are simply marvellous! They are exactly what I am looking for, but the Winter 2005 issue of the Interweave Knits is no longer available. If you still have this issue, with this pattern, would it be at all possible to let me have a copyi any way you would prefer?
I would really appreciate this.
Karin
These are beautiful! I've always been intrigued by this pattern, but was deterred by the cost of the Foxy. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to put this on my to-knit list!
