Christmas is Just 5 Months Away

I know I've been pretty quite around here, but it's not for lack of knitting. I figured it was time to get a start on my Christmas knits and I wanted to tackle my biggest project first. About 2 weeks ago I started knitting the Lizard Ridge blanket for my mom, and am already over halfway done! The pattern is a lot simpler than I though it would be, especially once I found this tutorial provided by KnitPicks on picking up wrapped stitched. The yarn I'm using is Noro Kureyon, colorway 164. I got an amazing deal on full bags of Kureyon at Little Knits, so I picked up two bags for this blanket and another two bags for a second Lizard Ridge in colorway 150 for myself! The sale is still going on although a few colorways have sold out.

Over halfway there

I've also been thinking a lot about what else I want to make for my family. I haven't started on anything else yet but I'm planning on a Koolhaas, Architect Scarf, Hemlock Ring Blanket, February Baby Sweater, and various mittens, hats, toys, and probably a shawl. I haven't totally figured it all out, but it's still early. :) So I have a question few questions for you. Do you plan on knitting any holiday gifts this year, and if so, what do you plan on making? Also how many gifts do you plan on knitting? I'd really love to knit something for everyone in my family, but I don't know how realistic that is. I'd love to hear your ideas and suggestions!

Okay, so I'm coming to this a little late, but am hypothesizing the Lizard Ridge blanket as my next project after I finish holiday knitting. Other LR blankets I've seen are made from blocks sewn together whereas yours looks like it has been knit wholly - is my impression correct and, if so, wherever did you find that adaptation because it's brilliant / how did you figure that out?

I totally acknowledge this could be a dumb question - I'm only six months old in terms of being a knitter.

I definitely give knitted Christmas gifts. I'm giving my mother and sister lace shawls; they are already done although one isn't blocked yet. I'll be making some scarf/hat/mitten sets for my Dad and my partner too.

Last year I made mini-mitten tree ornaments, which I loved; this year I'm planning on making mini-sweater tree ornaments. Good stash-busters!

Your lizard ridge blanket looks amazing. I've got this one in the queue myself, but I need a really really good sale on colorways I like first.

OMG- this is gorgeous! I love the colores! I like it better this way, than the squares.

Beautiful! I love the colors in that. I've started thinking about Christmas knitting, and in previous years I have vowed against it! But I'm starting now, and have a real plan and list and everything, and I am allowing myself an out in the form of non-knit things to cover my rear. ^_^

Well since I discovered cowls, I think it's going to be cowls for everyone! And your LR is stunning...

Oooh I just love this, and now want one of my own! Christmas is Summer time at our spot of the world, so toys and floppy cotton hats, and maybe crochet togs? are the go here!

I plan a lot of holiday knitting. My nephew has a birthday in Sept, my niece and mother in Nov so what I don't get done for the bdays, they get for Christmas. So far, started are sweaters for my nephew and mother. The rest of the list includes hats for my nephew and father (these will be done during Ravelympics). Hats for my hairdressers two girls and something for her, maybe mitts or mittens. Two friends at work get knitted items, others get bought. My niece get something, usually mittens or a scarf. There may be more, I should actually write it down soon.

I am planning to make a few knitted babes for the girls in my family.

Beautiful afghan! I can't afford enough Noro to knit one myself but I just might have to start saving up for one.

Christmas knitting....I always seem to have more plans for gifts than I really have time for! Very frustrating....I should learn how to knit Continental, maybe that would speed me up lol. I'm hoping to knit socks for two of my kids, possibly a sweater for my 3rd child (she'll be 2 in December so it won't have to be very big!), a pair of handwarmers for my dad, and possibly socks for both my husband and my uncle. My sister and her boyfriend have both expressed interest in knit socks but I don't know if I'll have time for that many pairs of socks!!

I really enjoy reading your blog, both of you knit such beautiful items and are very inspiring.

Christmas? The Icelandic summer is SO short, and I won´t even think about the next season ( the one that starts with f- and has all the falling leaves and things) let alone the one after that...
    The blanket looks WONDERFUL.

Lizard Ridge is so much fun to knit! I love the color you've chosen. My version was knit in Silk Garden, and sadly is still in pieces...I knit it in strips and just can't face all that mattress stitch right now. Next time (yes!) I will knit it in one piece.

The blanket looks fantastic!!! :) I have yet to start my christmas knitting. I am making only socks this summer, then I will start all the hats for my brother and dad!

    That blanket looks divine!
Yes, I'm planning some Christmas presents this year, and actually I'm just about done with a couple of them (a childs sweater for my nephew and some socks for my sister). I don't know how many I'll end up with as there is such a thing as a coming baby that will probably wreck any planning ;) But until then, I'm happily knitting away.

Your Lizard ridge blanket is beautiful! I have never seen that pattern before/

I usually pick a few people to treat with handknit gifts for the year, and then I always do something for my mom :) My list includes a Koolhaus as well, log cabin socks, a tea cozy, mittens, and those felted strawberry bags and string market bags :)

OOOH I love that Lizard Ridge! It's on my to do list also...thanks for the heads up on the Noro sale!

I am going to knit a few gifts for Christmas. I have learned from years past that I will end up in tears on Christmas Eve if I try to make every gift. That doesn't stop me from trying lol. I try to concentrate on my kids and a few close female friends for the handknits, as they seem to be the most happy to receive them!

  • August 4, 2008, 9:44 pm - Annie (http://railyuh.blogspot.com)

Thanks for the tip on that sale! I picked up a few different things, including kureyon for a christmas stocking pattern I just picked out this morning for my son. It happened to be the very yarn they recommended (although a different colorway, but I like my choice even better).

  • August 4, 2008, 9:38 pm - Kim U (http://kimtimnashville.typepad.com/craftykim/)

You have totally made my week with this! I've been trying to figure out a special afghan/throw project to make for a friend who is getting married in October and Lizard Ridge is perfect. Thanks for the info on the Little Knits sale, too.

As for holiday knitting, I'm making a vest for my husband (as my ravelympics project) and some kind of reusable bag (possibly the everlasting bagstopper) for my sisters and a couple of other people. I'm not usually a major gift knitter, but I'm looking forward to it this year.

  • August 4, 2008, 8:04 pm - Adrienne (http://www.yarnforbrains.blogspot.com)

That's a pretty big list so far! I usually make things for my immediate family (my parents and sister) only. I always start planning fairly early, usually in the summer. I like to finish way ahead of schedule to avoid the stress/pressure of deadline knitting!

This year I'm planning on a scarf, an Ab Fab throw, two pairs of socks and a pair of mittens. The socks are almost done, and the mittens were started last week. And I've been working on the afghan since January. =)

  • August 4, 2008, 7:29 pm - Aunt Kathy (http://gimpykatk.blogspot.com/)

I usually make Christmas gifts... my nieces and sister in laws are easy... purses, scarves, hats dishcloths etc...

The boys are harder. I never know what to make for them.

  • August 4, 2008, 7:22 pm - Shannon (www.minervaturkey.com)

Oh gosh, only 5 months....umm...I bet start soon.

  • August 4, 2008, 6:31 pm - Kimberly (http://www.wovenspun.com/blogmain)

Does it count that I have *thought* about starting Christmas gifts just haven't actually done it yet.

  • August 4, 2008, 6:26 pm - JoannaB

I started my Christmas knitting this weekend. I made the first of quite a few cowl neckwarmers. I also have a sweater swatched out, but that may end up being a February birthday gift instead of a Christmas gift (I'm just being realistic!) :o)
