November 21, 2007 - Posted by Alice SchneblySuper Snowflake Mittens![]() Project Specs Well my second pair of mittens is now finished! These mittens are definitely super in every way—super easy, super soft, super cozy… I could keep going forever. I enjoyed this pattern, and the knitting zooms along. These mittens could really be knitted up in an evening. It literally took longer for my mittens to dry after blocking than it did actually knitting them! I only made a few minor changes to the pattern. I used the cast on number given for the Man’s L size mitten because I really wanted a comfy loose fit. I was able to try the mitten on while I was knitting it to get the right length dimensions, which ended up almost right on with the dimensions of the Woman’s L size in the book. First I knitted the thumb according to the directions for the Woman’s L, but it ended up way too huge. I reknit the thumb only picking up one stitch instead of the suggested three and it worked out really well.
I know it seems kind of crazy that I am on this mitten knitting kick and I live in Las Vegas. I know it is hard to believe, but there are actually times when it gets cold enough to wear mittens! Over the next few months we’ll have temperatures that drop into the 30s at times—these desert winter nights definitely can get chilly. I’ve lived in cold weather for many years, and it really isn’t my cup of tea. I’m not a winter worshipper of any kind. There were days when I was in college in Boston that I would dread leaving my dorm room because it was so miserable outside. My last winter in Boston was so bad I told myself I’d never go through a winter like that again if I had the choice. Now that I’m in Las Vegas I can actually go outside and enjoy the winter and enjoy wearing my handknits at the same time, a win-win situation for sure! I also wanted to say to everyone, Happy (early) Thanksgiving! Have a safe and fun holiday weekend. |

I'm a new knitter with just about 5 scarves under my belt (more if you count a couple that I took apart and started over on). Anyhow, I'm feeling adventurous and am thinking about exploring the world of mittens and your mittens (these in particular) look as straight forward as a mitten can get. SO, the question I have for you IS, where do I find the pattern you used? Can I download (even for a price)?
I've been loving your mittens for some time and now that I am offically freaking out at all the Christmas knitting I still have left to knit (with really only 3 days left, yikes!) I'm thinking some bulky mitts like yours might save the day...
So I thought I'd let you know that I love, love, love these and thank you thank you thank you for the cute embroidery idea which I'm about to copy.
Hope you don't mind...it is the sincerest form of flattery ;0)
Merry Christmas!
Those mittens look like something I'd like to try. I am not much of a mittens knitter but by your comments they could be easy to do. I saw you posted starting on the 15th and finished on the 16th. Do you have an idea of how many hours you spent on them?
These are so pretty.
They are so beautiful! I love the embroidery ;)
ooohhh we like!
Wonder if there's guinea pig version too!
Happy holidays! Hope your Thanksgiving was full of good eats and happy family.
Those snowflakes are a great finishing touch to your ice blue mittens. (and fingers crossed the DB doesn't pill too much so you can enjoy the mitts for a while)
Super-lovely!!!
Great mittens! That icy blue is one of my favorite colors. Have you checked out Kate Gilbert's Gifted mitten pattern (free)? It calls for DB Cashmerino Superchunky, too.
These are so pretty, very feminine. I love them.
Pretty mittens! I love that icy blue colour. And the snowflakes are perfect.
Oh my GAWSH, lady!!! Those are awesome! The stitch definition is so nice, and the snowflakes are so sweet! I hope you have these on Ravelry, cuz I'm heading over to fave them, right now!
So cute! Love the snowflakes!
AMAZING!!! I love this! I have a HUGE thing for snowflakes...probably because it does NOT snow in Alabama!! I love it!
That looks like a great, simple pattern, and the snowflakes are such a perfect little touch.
Isn't that yarn unbelievably soft? I did have some pilling when I used it, but I love it anyway. I've had more luck, pill-wise, with RYC Cashsoft, which is a similar texture.
these turned out really lovely. i've been thinking of maybe making some mittens. thanks for all the details in your post.
